What happens before the new surface goes down

Prep decides how long a resurfaced pool deck lasts, so most of our time on site goes there. The slab gets pressure washed, then ground with a diamond grinder so the coating has clean, open concrete to grab. Old sealer, paint and loose flakes have to come off, or the new coating peels away with them. Cracks get cut out and filled, and spalled edges near the coping get patched back flush.

A new surface follows the slab under it, so a deck that is still moving cannot be capped. Brevard sits on sandy flatwoods soil that drains fast but settles, and a corner that dropped once tends to keep dropping. Cracks that were stable at prep time usually stay put under the new finish, and we say so up front. A crack that is still working will come back through the new surface, often inside a year or two.

Pool decks are supposed to shed water away from the pool, at about a quarter inch of fall per foot. Old decks lose that pitch when the slab settles, and you get puddles that sit for days. We can build slope back into an overlay, or cut in a deck drain where the water has nowhere to go. Standing water stains a new finish and makes the deck slick, so this gets fixed before any color goes down.

How does a knockdown spray texture coating go on?

The material is an acrylic modified cement, not a paint, and it bonds into the slab we just prepped. A bond coat goes down first, then the texture coat gets sprayed through a hopper gun. The gun throws the mix in a splatter pattern, coarse or fine depending on how much air we run. Before it sets, a trowel knocks the peaks flat, which is where the knockdown texture comes from.

Color goes into the mix, so it is part of the surface instead of a layer sitting on top. It is what many people call cool deck, and the grip and the heat both come from the texture. Those small peaks cut down how much of your foot touches hot concrete at any one moment. A light color and that texture can leave a deck around twenty degrees cooler than bare gray concrete.

Two thin coats of sealer finish the job, sprayed and then back rolled so the texture stays open. Foot traffic is usually fine after a day or two, and furniture goes back after about three days. Your pool can stay full the whole time, because all of this happens above the waterline. Summer afternoons here bring rain most days, so we start early and watch the radar before we spray.

Which resurfacing route fits your deck?

A spray texture coating is the thinnest of the three routes, and it barely changes the deck height. It grips well when wet and takes custom colors, so it suits a plain deck that just needs renewing. A stamped overlay is thicker than that, at roughly a quarter inch to three eighths of an inch. That thickness holds a slate or flagstone pattern and still clears most door and slider thresholds.

Thin pavers are the heaviest of the three and the only route that gives you a true paver surface. They sit about an inch and a half above the old concrete once they are set. Most Brevard pools sit inside a screen enclosure, and no machine fits through a screen door. Material comes in by wheelbarrow or gets pumped over the top, which is slower but keeps your cage intact. When a slab has broken into pieces or dropped at a corner, no surface will fix it. That deck needs to come out, and a new paver pool deck is the path we would price.

How long does a resurfaced pool deck last here?

Brevard County runs about fifty one inches of rain a year, most of it from late May into October. There is no freeze here, so the damage comes slowly, from sun and from pool chemistry. Beachside decks in places like Satellite Beach also take salt air off the ocean every day. Salt air pulls at sealer and finds any spot the prep missed, which is why prep gets the hours.

A salt system is harder on a deck than most owners expect, and the sealer takes the hit. Splashout dries and leaves salt crystals that grind at the finish and lift it in patches. Rinsing the deck now and then helps, and a fresh coat of sealer every two to three years helps more. Kept up that way, a spray texture deck commonly holds its look for seven to ten years.

What drives the cost of pool deck resurfacing?

Square footage is the first driver, and a pool deck is rarely a simple rectangle to measure. Edge work around the coping, steps, planters and spa adds time that a tape measure hides. Condition is the second driver, since a slab that needs crack repair and slope correction adds a full day. The route you pick moves the number most, from spray texture at the low end to thin pavers at the top.

Access changes the price too, because a screened cage or a narrow side gate means everything moves by hand.
